Event Summary

Roberto Azevêdo, Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO), shared his thoughts on “The WTO at 20” and future prospects for global cooperation in trade. Gary Clyde Hufbauer chaired the event, held on September 24, 2015 at the Peterson Institute.

Azevêdo was elected as the sixth director-general of the WTO in May 2013. Prior to this position, he was appointed in 2008 as Brazil's permanent representative to the WTO and ambassador in Geneva to the United Nations' international organizations. From 2006 to 2008, he was vice-minister for Economic and Technical Affairs at the Foreign Ministry in Brasilia. In 2001, he was named the head of the Brazilian Foreign Ministry's Dispute Settlement Unit where he remained until 2005.

Gary Clyde Hufbauer, Reginald Jones Senior Fellow since 1992, was formerly the Maurice Greenberg Chair and director of studies at the Council on Foreign Relations from 1996 to 1998, the Marcus Wallenberg Professor of International Finance Diplomacy at Georgetown University from 1985 to 1992, and deputy director of the International Law Institute at Georgetown University from 1979 to 1981.
